CATCH DEBUTS TUESDAY

The Ferrari of trotters, Trophy Catch, makes his season's
debut in Tuesday night's second race at the
Meadowlands.
The half-brother to the richest North American
standardbred of all-time, Moni Maker, Trophy Catch heads into a condition trot
for three-year-olds off of a 1:54 qualifying victory on June 6. He leaves
from post 10.
David Miller will be in
the sulky behind the horse trained by Jimmy Takter, who is spending Flag Day
[June 14] as the father of the bride, giving his daughter, Nancy, in marriage to
driver Marcus Johansson.
"I don't blame
people for getting off the bandwagon after he [Trophy Catch] broke in his first
two qualifiers, but this colt has a lot of talent," said Takter, who also
trained the queen of two continents, Moni Maker. "He's like a Ferrari on
the New Jersey Turnpike. He's not meant to go slow. The faster you
go with him, the better he is. He's one of the most talented colts I've
ever had. He's just very childish and immature. He'll make breaks
for no reason."
Trophy Catch is by Pine
Chip, the sire of the past two Hambletonian winners in Scarlet Knight [2001] and
Chip Chip Hooray [2002], and he is starting down a road the might that might
lead to this year's Hambletonian on the first Saturday in August at the
Meadowlands.
A costly breaking
problem limited the colt's ability to catch trophies as a two-year-old, posting
three wins in seven starts for earnings of $9,200.
In the two-year-old Kentucky Sire Stakes Final at
Lexington, Trophy Catch was on an easy lead in mid-stretch when he broke
stride. He also miscued in his Breeders Crown elimination and again in the
Valley Victory Final, while sitting in the two-hole on the far
turn.
"He has all the ability in the
world," said Takter after the colt's 1:54 qualifying mile, with a 27.4-second
final quarter under a hand drive. "David [Miller] was extremely

1.11,7 över 1609 meter med bilstart var han nästan elva (!)
längder före sina konkurrenter. Nu

Hambletonian.
Trophy Catch är alltså halvbror till Moni Maker, världens bästa
travsto genom tiderna. Mamman
Nan’s Catch har de gemensamt och Trophy Catch har 1994 års elitloppsfavorit Pine
Chip som fader.
Som tvååring vann Trophy Catch tre lopp på sju starter, men visade
dessvärre också en fallenhet för onödiga galopper.
Inget sådant sågs på The Meadowlands utanför New York natten mot
onsdag, svensk tid. Storfavoriten Trophy Catch hade inga problem alls
från det dåliga tiondespåret. Efter halva loppet kördes han fram till ledningen,
en ledning som sedan bara drygades ut.
Tvåan Captain Cook lämnades på efterkälken med nästan elva
längder.

– Jag är väldigt nöjd med sättet som Trophy Catch tävlade i dag,
sade tränaren Jimmy Takter efter loppet till Meadowlands officiella
hemsida.
Motståndet den här gången var förvisso inte det allra värsta. Men
Trophy Catch är redan en av favoriterna till slutsegern i årets Hambletonian
Stakes som körs på The Meadowlands 2 augusti.

HOPEFUL TROPHY CATCH TOYS WITH COMPETITION
Hambletonian
hopeful Trophy Catch [$3.40, $3.00, $3.20] drew off to a 10 and a half-length
victory in the second race, a $10,000 condition event for three-year-olds, on
Tuesday night at the Meadowlands.
The
half-brother to two-time Horse of the Year, Moni Maker, trotted the mile in
1:55.2 in his season's debut as he heads down the road to the $1.2 million
Hambletonian on August 2.
Captain
Cook [$4.00, $3.20] was second best and Wildwood Dream [$7.00] was third by 12
and a half-lengths.
Driver
David Miller eased Trophy Catch out of the 10-hole and settled into sixth on the
pylons until the trotters straightened on the backstretch after a quarter in
28.4. The 3-5 favorite edged out along the outside tier and picked up
horses, claiming the lead a few strides past the half in 57.2.
He
doubled his five and a quarter lead at the top of the stretch when he crossed
the line for his fourth win in eight career starts.
'I'm
happy with the way he raced,' said Miller. 'We wanted to give him a nice
trip, and we accomplished that. He was just as good as last week's
qualifier [in 1:54].'
'He
raced good,' said trainer Jimmy Takter, who also campaigned Moni Maker to Horse
of the Year honors in 1998 and 1999. 'Everything is the same with
him. He's a green colt. It was his first time in the 10-hole.
He's going to be okay. I'm very happy with the way he raced.'
